Mosler Safe Serial Numbers

All used GSA safes from Mosler, Diebold and Hamilton have a serial number that indicates the date of manufacture for each brand. The label will also include the model number or NSN number (National Stock Number) and the Government contract number that was used as the vehicle to purchase the safe, container or file cabinet.

Location of the Serial Number
Finding the serial number on a two drawer container or 4 drawer container is fairly simple and requires just a few steps.

Step 1.
Open the top drawer of the container. Some used safes have the older X-08 or X-07 locks, all new containers have the X-09 TPI lock.

Step 2.
Pull open the control drawer head and look on the outside right of the drawer head.

Step 3.
The serial numbers are located on the outside right when facing the GSA Approved Container.

Class 5 Guns Safes

For the storage of long barrel or short barrel weapons and ammunition a GSA Approved Gun Safe is required for Federal Agencies, contractors and sub-contractors working on Government projects or contacts.

Class 5 GSA Approved Weapons Storage safes can be ordered empty or with roll out rifle carts. Additional Storage Boxes built in the upper corners of the safe allow for the storage of ammunition or accessories. A 1 yr. parts and labor warranty and Free Dock to dock shipping and delivery in the Continental United States come standard with each gun safe.

The current lock standard is the S&G 8550 dial combination lock.

New Lock for Field Safes and Weapons Safes

Beginning March 1st, 2008, all Class 6 Field Safes and Class 5 Weapons Safes will be equipped with the new Sargent and Greenleaf model 2937 Lock. This change will replace the Sargent and Greenleaf 8550 that is currently the standard.

Here is a brief explanation of this new lock, courtesy of the Sargent and Greenleaf website:

"The Sargent and Greenleaf model 2937 lock is a UL® Group 1 lock designed to meet the recent federal specification FF-L-2937. The model 2937 offers rugged all metal- 3 wheel construction, twenty man-hours of resistance to expert manipulation, and stainless steel bolt strong enough to resist 600lbs of force. It comes standard with Spy-Proof® dial for added dialing security. The model 2937 installs and operates like all other Sargent and Greenleaf three wheel locks to ensure easy retrofits and new installations alike."

The Sargent and Greenleaf model 8550 lock is still approved for use on existing GSA containers.

Refurbished containers meet expectations!

Demand for Class 5 and Class 6 containers is currently at an all-time high. With this increased demand comes longer lead times, often resulting in unavoidable delays. Government sub-contracts require items such as Classified documents, weapons, ammunition, arms room keys, and the like to be stored in GSA Approved Security Containers before work can begin.

Current lead times for new GSA Storage Containers typically runs between 45-75 days. Failure to plan ahead in order to accommodate these longer lead times has resulted in numerous contracts being revoked by DoD inspectors.

Thankfully, there are solutions available on short notice. Refurbished containers that have been re certified to meet up to date GSA and DoD standards are generally in stock and ready for shipment. These GSA Approved re-certified containers are equipped with the new X-09 locks, which meet the current FF-L-2740 standard, include new handles and moving hardware or bolt work and have a powder coated finish that is more scratch and damage resistant (unlike new containers which are wet painted).

Your company has been working on several projects for the United States Government. Some of this work is deemed Top Secret. Information about this project is required to be stored in a GSA Approved Security Container. Current options include Class 5 and Class 6. Class 5, generally speaking, is for the storage of anything other than Classified Documents – Think physical items such as weapons, ammunition, evidence, Schedule II Narcotics, access control keys, etc. Class 6 is the lower rated of the two and is required for the storage of Top Secret information.

Other projects are deemed Secret or Confidential by Federal standards. The containers you have been using to store information about these projects are simply steel filing cabinets with a metal lock bar that runs down the entire container and is secured with a key operated or combination padlock.

Up until today’s date, October 1^st, 2012, the steps you have taken to ensure that the physical security requirements set forth by the United States Government have been sufficient. You have passed previous inspections from the DoD and fully expect and assume you will pass any future inspections.

As of October 1^st, 2012 you can NO LONGER store ANY Classified Information, regardless of whether it is deemed Top Secret, Secret, or Confidential in ANYTHING OTHER THAN A GSA APPROVED SECURITY CONTAINER.

According to the word flowing through the grapevine, there will be inspections, and infractions will be met with serious consequences, up to and including pulling government contracts!

This is a serious issue, a dramatic change in policy, and a matter that needs to be given utmost attention. Large DoD Subcontractors are acting now. There is a VERY limited production capability in this market. Do not wait until the last minute to evaluate your current and future storage needs.
